Rash: Fifth disease (or erythema infectiosum) is a viral infection caused by parvovirus b19. It usually presents with fever, followed by rash which initially looks as if the affected person (usually a child) has been slapped across the cheeks. A lacy rash on the extremities often follows. The virus can cause fetal death -usually within the first 20 weeks. Joint pain can also occur.
