Bruising & swelling?: Have an x-ray taken. Usually with a break, there is bleeding from the bone which leads to swelling and bruising to the toe and surrounding area. This is not always the case, but when i see this, i always take an x-ray to see. There is some degree of pain when the toe is moved at the site of the injury. Too much depends on the site and extent of the break to recommend treatmnent options.

Have it looked at.: You will need and x-ray to see if you have a fracture or if it is just a sprain. If fractured, you will need to be immobilized with a splint, cast, or rigid walking boot depending on the location of the injury. If fractured, it may need to be reduced in the office or possibly in the operating room. Have it evaluated by your physician to get the appropriate treatment.
