Prevention: Most doctors would want to help prevent panic attacks -- rather than wait for them to happen, and then treat sporadically with xanax (alprazolam). Xanax (alprazolam) is meant to be temporary, can be habit-forming, and is not preventative for panic. Other medications, such as ssri's, etc, are preventive; it's also important to work on the anxiety in psychotherapy.

Xanax (alprazolam): Concern doctors have include dependency & tolerance (increasing dose due to loss of potency over time), especially when used on more than twice daily regimen for long time. This, however, exceeds the regimen you are on.
