First gyn visit: A routine gyn visit consists of BP check, thyroid check, breast exam, speculum exam of the cervix including a pap smear, and bimanual exam (digital exam of the pelvic organs). Most gyn's would also perform a rectal exam at the same time to examine the space between the rectum and vagina.

Don't worry!: During your first ever gyn visit, make it clear whether you are comfortable or not with an exam. It might be better to schedule a visit to review your history and discuss birth control, and then schedule a followup visit for an exam. As far as birth control, try to consider why you want to start it - is it just for birth control, or is it for control of cycle related symptoms as well.
