A member asked:

Would a pulse ox screening done on a newborn within 24 hrs. detect an asd?

Not necessarily: The ASD may or may not produce the type of changes in blood oxygen content needed to be picked up on this type of screen. The size of the defect is variable.Detection of specific heart sounds might bring the proper studies to confirm this defect.

No: ASD is not amongst the cardiac defects that would be picked up by pulse oxymetry screening.

Maybe/Maybe Not: A child's pulse-ox screen will only be low if there is "blue" blood making it out to the body. In the first few hours of life, the resistance in the lungs is still high and may cause blue blood to flow across the asd. This is relatively unlikely though, and so most times the pulse ox screen would not detect an asd.
