Possible tight achil: When you have a tight achilles tendon you have a greater chance of having an ankle sprain. If you start stretching exercises to more the achilles tendon longer the cracking should subside and it will help you walk faster. If the cracking persist despite weeks of stretching and MRI will be needed to rule out the cause.

Tendon popping: Usually if the ankle is cracking after a sprain it is due to the swelling in the area. This can cause the tendon that extends around the ankle to pop out it's shallow groove if it has been disrupted. Nothing to worry about if it doesn't hurt.
