Gluconeogenesis: 1. Meter accuracy is such that you could test blood from two different fingers minutes apart and get one reading of 94 and another reading of 108. So the blood sugar may not have actually gone up. 2. Overnight, the liver can convert Amino Acids into glucose. This is usually a good thing, but can lose regulation in people with diabetes or pre-diabetes, so sugar goes up overnight.
