Flashes/floaters: These symptoms occur as we get older and the firm vitreous gel gets more liquefied. The process in which the gel separates from the retina is called posterior vitreous detachment. While it is occurring, there may be pulling on the retina by strands of vitreous. When this occurs, the retina transmits the sensation of flashes to the brain. Prolonged pulling causes prolonged flashes.
