How to deal with an allergy to dog saliva?

Get a cat: There is no easy answer here other than stay away from the head end of the dog. Frequent hand washing, gloves, and antihistamines come to mind ( topical or systemic) there are side affects to systemic antihistamines that makes that a poor choice.
