Enough to cause : Crushing of the tissue. If the injury is severe enough to crush the tissue, that will lead to bleeding into the tissue that will then clot. An other way is if the blood vessels get crushed, then a clot may form in the blood vessels which is more serious.

I don't think: One needs much trauma at all. I think if there is pain, or swelling it is something to be mindful of and have checked out. A clot is dangerous and if left untreated can cause death. I would err on the side of caution.
