A Bloody Mystery: Blood in the stool may occur for several reasons. The most concerning reason, however, would be a tumor. Since tumors may be harmless or cancerous, the best way to know is to see a physician for a colonoscopy. A visual and digital exam by a physician can be helpful, but not always definitive. Food-borne illnesses can cause bloody stool, however you are quite sick. An exam is your best bet.
