Less Deep Sleep: Generally benzodiazepines in those without sleep apnea do the following - increased stage two (light) sleep decreased stage four (deep) sleep in chronic use they minimally increase total sleep time they are great at reducing anxiety about not sleeping benzodiazepines can worsen sleep in sleep apnea due to effects on breathing and muscle tone.
