Ear wax: Ear wax or cerumen mixed with debris/moisture is likely the culprit. Use otc ear wax drops with a warm water flush and blow dry on cool to eliminate the wax more simply. Some pediatricians or ear nose and throat physicians can schedule an appointment for removal if you are squeamish.

"smelly"?: If it is foul smelling, i would prefer an ENT physician checking out the ears and they could clean the ears out too if it is wax.

Wax vs. infection: It is could likely be an ear infection with a small perforation (which caused the blood mixed in with the infection). Some children do not complain with ear infections. It could also be excessive wax as well. The smell makes it more likely an infection but you should follow up with a specialist to make your child gets the appropriate treatment one way or another.
