Maybe, maybe not: Some effects of medications are dependent on the dose, but other effects may not be dependent on dosing. The doctor may recommend trying the lower dose, but that might not be enough to treat the medical illness. The doctor may also recommend taking the medication at a different time of day, or maybe splitting it into 20mg twice a day instead of 40mg once a day.
