Number of reasons: Estrogen and Progesterone control the menstrual cycle. Estrogen causes a build up of the uterine lining and Progesterone causes a breakdown and eventual sloughing off of the uterine lining. Sometimes when these 2 hormones are not in the right ratio to each other, there is breakthrough bleeding. Weight gain and loss can cause it too, as well as thyroid disorders, and uterine polyps or fibroids.
