Check sleeping area: If this is an event linked to a night of sleep, it may reflect an irritant or allergic challenge by things in his bedroom. Pillows accumulate dust mites, as does the mattress,(covers are available) Air fresheners or even the fragrance from his linen could do this. A glop of nasal saline gel in each side at bedtime can trap some of these irritants. If nothing helps some allergy testing may.
