A member asked:

My daughter has a large stye on her upper eyelid and it's been there for nearly 2weeks. what does it mean when a stye turns black?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Breakthrough: A stye is a pus filled gland of the lid. If untreated, it will enlarge and eventually breaks through to the surface. If the area is not cleaned - and they are commonly tender at this stage - the material passing through to the outside can oxidize and turn dark to black. This should be cleaned with warm soaks and this may help clear it up. Otherwise see your ophthalmologist.
