Time to call doc: If your wife is 9 months, and you're unsure about the cause, it's absolutely essential to let her doctor know about any new belly pains/cramping - even if they appear to be around the stomach and not related at all to the pregnancy. Besides contractions, there are also uterine infections which can cause abdominal pain which need to be treated sooner rather than later. Please call her doc!

If not labor-BABY: If she is not in labor, and the pain has been checked out by her OB md, then it is usually the baby's position in her abdomen or "kicking" that is the cause.
