If you insert NuvaRing on the first day of menstrual bleeding it works immediately, it's not necessary to use an backup method. If you start on day 2 to 5, use a barrier method of birth control, such as condoms or spermicide for the first seven days of NuvaRing use.

Yes, as long as...: Yes, as long as one is using the NuvaRing correctly (it's website has complete instructions). The site also says NuvaRing can accidentally slip out of the vagina during intercourse. If NuvaRing slips out of the vagina and it has been out for less than three hours, the woman is still be protected from pregnancy as long as she has been using NuvaRing the right way, following all the instructions.
