Weakened dermis: Stretch marks result from overly rapid stretching of the skin, generating thinning of the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis. Initially purple-red they will eventually turn white. Some people think "old" stretch marks blend with tanning. Treatments to avoid include microdermabrasion and cosmeceuticals which further thin the skin.
