Longstanding sicknss: Cirrhosis comes on slowly, almost always over years, in the setting of ongoing liver disease. Only one heavy drinker in 3 actually gets true cirrhosis (fibrosis / lasting scar); it's common in hepatitis b and c, hemochromatosis (don't miss this common one), and some other less familiar illnesses. Of all the organs, your liver's the most likely to be in perfect shape when you're 100.
