Mostly inherited: Most color deficiency, usually in males, is due to an inherited genetic defect. Most who have it don't know about it until tested as they have no standard for comparison and their deficiency to them seems "normal". Color deficiency can be acquired in global retinal diseases like advanced diabetic retinopathy and a few rare CNS lesions can also do this.
