How does a laminectomy function?

Less nerve pressure: The lamina is the part of the bony spine that covers the back part of the nerve and the spinal cord. A laminectomy means removing the lamina. This can relieve some of the pressure off the spinal cord or the nerves. This can results in less pain, numbness, and/or weakness radiating into the extremities.

It is removal of a : Portion of the roof or posterior bone of the spinal canal to decompress or relieve pressure on the nerve tissue or as a way to gain access to remove something inside the spinal canal like a disc herniation, tumor, blood clot, infection or a broken piece of bone or to allow placement of an interbody fusion implant.
