Dr. James Chu answered

Autoimmune thyroid : Elevated levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-tpo abs) and elevated levels of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are seen in autoimmune thyroid disease. These may be the earliest findings of the immune system starting to attack the thyroid gland. Eventually the thyroid gland becomes injured (changes visible on ultrasound) and may progress to hypothyroidism. This describes hashimoto'thyroiditis.
