4 weeks: It depends on which level (or levels) is being operated upon. Operations at any level may cause some hoarseness of the voice which is usually temporary, but may be permanent in rare cases. Operations along the upper cervical spine (i.e. C3-4, c4-5) may cause inability to sing at a high pitch so discuss this with your surgeon. Most patients have a normal voice about 1 month after their surgery.

As soon as you feel : Comfortable enough to do so. Talk to your surgeon about the risks of hoarseness and vocal cord paralysis associated with this type of surgery.
