How is cmv diagnosed?

Viral culture: Antibody testing for CMV is not useful. The only way to really diagnose CMV infection is to detect it in bodily fluids by viral culture.

Culture or PCR: In addition to taking a sample and incubating it with cells (a viral culture test), a very sensitive blood test (cmv pcr) can also be performed.

PCR test: PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test is the most widely used for detecting CMV infection/viremia (the presence of the virus in the blood). Viral culture takes too long for it to be clinically useful and the antibody (CMV IgG) only indicates if the person had a past exposure.
