Environmentally: Good question. Patients with spinal cord injury (particularly higher level, more complete injuries) are 'poikilothermic' meaning that their environment dictates their body temperature. Out in the heat, a person with quadriplegia may run fever. In the cold, hypothermia is a real concern. The best solution: get out of the elements. Dress appropriately, layer, and monitor body temp while outdoors.

Depends on level: This really depends on the level of spinal cord injury & it's completeness with levels above t6 being the level that affects these patients the most as to adjusting for cold & heat. They need to stay in environments that can be temperature controlled, ideally. Otherwise, they need to be dressed appropriately for changes of temperature & aware as well as educated concerning this aspect of sci.
