A member asked:

How do i know if my cold is something more than just a cold?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Easy: A "cold" usually means a viral illness to an M.D. These are short lived and resolve on their own in 5 to 7 days. The symptoms are just managed to make you feel a bit better. Otc meds for each of three symptoms, congestion, cough and malaise are usually suggested. Once the symptoms are not easily controlled you need a pcp evaluation for other options and diagnosis.
