Find out cause: Some people of african &/or Asian descent may normally have low white cell count that fluctuate between 2.5 to 5.0, not causing any problem with the ability to fight off infection as long as the absolute neutrophil count is above 1k.However, if the ANC falls below 1k, keeps decreasing, is assoc w/anemia &/or low platelet count, then see doc as could be sign of a host of causes.C additnl comments belo.

So if the low WBC is assoc w/ an autoimmune disorder, then trt the disorder. If assoc w/b12 deficiency, treat w/b12. Some meds, viral infections, diseases which suppress the bone marrow, among other causes may also be assoc w/ low WBC. Treat the disorder. Neupogen can be used as treatment in cases associated with cancer?

Depends: Studies done in the 1960's support the idea that with low white blood cell counts, the critical factor is the neutrophil count (type of white cell), which, if it falls below 500, increases the risk of infection. There are people who tend to run low white cell counts who have no problems.
