Can an ultrasound detect if a woman got pregnant in late september as opposed to mid-october?

Not yet.: If it has been less than 3 weeks since conception, there may well be no visible sign of a pregnancy at this time. 2 or 3 weeks from now, a conception late in september should be visible on a vaginal ultrasound while one from mid october should not.
