Extra estrogen: Obesity is associated with increased estrone production in women as well as in men. The source of this increased estrogen appears to be from metabolism of the prehormone androstenedione, which increases in proportion to the severity of the obesity. Thus, the extra female hormone effect (estrogen effect) is seen in men and women.
