Brain cells injured: Concussions, a form of mild traumatic brain injury (tbi), are usually caused by a blow to the head which causes the brain to move within the skull. The force of the brain moving suddenly, often bumping the skull, causes chemicals to leak out of the brain cells. It is important to rest to allow the brain to repair the damage to these delicate cells. www.cdc.gov/concussion/.

See below: Dorland's medical dictionary defines concussion as loss of consciousness, or loss of memory, or a combination of both due to trauma. Site of concussion is brainstem, which is "shocked" and transient cut-off of reticular activating system, but typically fully reversible, if no additional traumatic brain injury. Post-concussional problems may last up to 6 weeks afterwards in some cases.
