Dr. Pamela Pappas answered

Involuntary commit: Some mental illnesses disturb a person's insight -- and s/he may not recognize his or her own illness. If the person is mentally ill, dangerous to self or others, or not taking care of self, then involuntary hospitalization is needed for treatment. This involves legal commitment processes that differ between states; the person can be detained for certain periods for evaluation, etc.
