Fluid backup to lung: Left-sided heart failure results in fluid buildup in the lungs and causes shortness of breath. This can be a result of problems with the mitral valve. If this is the case, correction of the valvular disease can arrest progression of the disease.Typically, over time, the right heart will also fail.
