See below: The symptoms vary by the age of the patient and the severity of lead levels. Some of the damage, particularly that to the nervous system may be permanent. For more info see this site. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/lead-poisoning/fl00068.

Yes: Lead poisoning in adults commonly causes headache, memory loss, anemia, and defects in the nervous system that can lead to muscle weakness. High enough levels of lead may even be lethal. Lead poisoning can be diagnosed and treated by a physician.

By the time you have symptoms of lead poisoning, how high is your lead level?

Variable: The cut-off values for abnormal lead levels are based on age: 10 versus 25 for child versus adult, respectively (ug/dl). However, each person is unique in how they respond to elevated levels. Therefore, your level may not be so high above normal, and yet you can still have severe symptoms.

It depends.: This depends on how much exposure there was. If a person has lead encephalopathy when chelation therapy is started, permanent brain damage, like cerebral palsey is a frequent consequence. Age-related mental decline and psychiatric symptoms also occur, and in young children it is linked to learning disabilities, lower intelligence, impaired coordination, less memory, and social impairment.

Constitutional: Symptoms are really variable, but include loss of short-term memory or concentration, depression, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of coordination, and numbness and tingling (often in the limbs), fatigue, problems with sleep, headaches, stupor, slurred speech, and anemia -- but there are often other "non-specific" signs and symptoms. Blood testing is usually required.
