Could be: Referred to as matting of eyelids, this can be a sign of conjunctivitis -- which is an eye infection or inflammation. Other conditions such as blepharitis can also cause it.

Depends: Although pink eye can cause the eyelids to stick together when sleeping, the most common presentation is a pink/red eye with discharge throughout the day, lasting on average about 7-14 days. If all you are experiencing is the crusting without redness or itchy eyes, it is probably not pink eye. See an eye doctor if it does not go away within a couple of days - pink eye is very contagious.
