A member asked:

How does giving you a mild case of the flu work as a vaccine against the actual flu?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Differs with vaccine: The injectible flu vaccine is a dead & does not give anyone the flu but some may have a mild reaction to the vaccine. The body develops antibodies to the dead flu "bodies" just as if they were alive, protecting you from flu. The living nasal mist is a weakened live flu preparation that can give some mild flu sx, but you develop protective antibodies without developing full blown flu disease.
