Variable: Typically, small hiatal hernias do not cause symptoms, or may be a contributing factor to heartburn or regurgitation. Large hiatal hernias (paraesophageal) can cause chest pain and pressure, difficulty swallowing, anemia due to bleeding ulcers, and weight loss due to avoidance of food.
