TOF is a spectrum: Tetralogy of fallot (tof) can be mild, "pink tet" meaning the outflow tract to the lungs is only mildly narrowed, or newborns can be more "blue tet" meaning there is at least moderate obstruction of blood flow. Tof with complete outflow obstruction, called pulmonary atresia will require something to be done early in the newborn period. A complete echo will help sort things out after birth.

Open heart surgery: Tetralogy of fallot is a congenital heart defect where the outflow from the right side of the heart to the lungs is limited. It is the most common cyanotic (blue) heart defect. Some babies are blue at birth and require a surgically placed connection (shunt) but many newborns appear well. In either case, open heart surgery is required to correct the problem, and is usually done at 6-8 months.
