Lordosis is normal: Lumbar lordosis is normal. There are fusion surgeries that can turn kyphosis (abnormal forward tilt of low back) into physiologic (normal) lumbar lordosis.

Hyperlordosis: Lordosis is the natural curvature of the lumbar region. When someone's back curves too much, that is called "hyperlordosis". Correcting this often involves a fusion of the bones of the spine where the curve is greatest, to straighten the spine somewhat and put the curve back into the normal range. If the back is too straight, (flat back syndrome), the spine may need to be fused more curved.

Swayback: There is a normal amount of lordosis in the lumbar spine, which is approximately 55 degrees. When you have a lordosis significantly more than this, it is called hyperlordosis, which is a way to say "swayback". A spinal surgery to correct this would be known as a spinal reconstruction surgery because it is an attempt to reconstruct the normal alignment of the spine. Thanks.
