Yes: Not sure exactly what you mean by jaw surgery, but reconstructive surgery of the jaws, or orthognathic surgery, is very common and routine.

NOT UNCOMMON: Jaw surgery is utilized to correct jaw growth discrepancies or mal-alignement. Usually jaw surgery is recommended when you cannot correct your bite with orthodontics. Remember the orthodontics only moves the teeth through the bone. If the bone is under developed then jaw surgery may be needed to facilitate proper bite and facial balance.

Yes: As a practicing orthodontist, i encounter many patients (usually adults) who cannot be treated well without the addition of jaw surgery. Orthodontists and maxillo-facial surgeons work very closely and well to create the proper diagnosis, treatment plan and eventual outcome.
