Dermatophytes: Dermatophytes are molds that can invade the superficial layers of the skin and cause infection. There are 3 genera of pathologic dermatophyte fungi: trichophyton, microsporum and epidermophyton. Transfer of infecting organisms from soil, animals of humans is accomplished by arthrospores or vegetative cells with thick cell walls that can survive for more than a year outside their hosts.
