Dr. John Paas answered

Within the 1st cycle: Provided you begin your pack of pills at the onset of a menstrual period (or the sunday following the start of a menstrual period), the pill will be effective during that cycle. Generally, i tell patients to use a backup method for the first two weeks when starting the pill, and it is certainly safe by the beginning of the second cycle of pills, if taken as directed.
