Not known: The active constituent in khat is s-cathinone, which has amphetamine-like effects and may increase norepinephrine and dopamine. Cathinone is a controlled substance. Khat has been used for centuries for its euphoric effects. It may have psychiatric and cardiotoxic effects. Most treatments today seem to focus on the psychiatric problems it creates rather than on the addiction to it.
