Short term sleep: Ambien (zolpidem) reduces brain activity and allows you to get to sleep somewhat more easily. It has been shown to be moderately helpful in the short term (weeks). In the long run it probably continues to have that effect but there is some evidence that your brain adapts to the medication (reduced effect). Also, there is evidence that all medications like this are associated with increased fall risk.
