More info: It would be helpful to know what side of the ankle the pain is. If it is on the inside, then you may have injury to the nerve, or compression of the nerve to the ankle and foot.

Nerve: In most cases when pain in the foot travels upward to the top of the leg, the cause is from irritation of the nerve. There are special tests that can measure what is going on in the nerve that can decisively determine the cause. An examination is order.
