Takes longer : It certainly takes longer than several hours for swelling to decrease while the most common etiology for the pain is a contusion or a sprain of the ucl you may want to make sure you don't have a minor fracture or any instability. If symptoms persist, see an orthopedist for exam/ xray.

Xray: I would not ignore this. You need an xray and a clinical evaluation to rule out a fracture and a ligament tear.
