Removal of minerals: Used for removing poisons like lead from body, usually. But the chelation you are probably hearing about is using that medicine to remove calcium from blood vessel wall to treat hardening of blood vessels (atherosclerosis) in heart and brain. The problem is that it has not been proven in traditional medical literature to be of benefit & has many side effects besides cost. Alternative med use only.

See below: Chelation is a bona fide way to treat poisoning with lead, mercury and iron overload. However, a number of people are promoting calcium chelation with edta for heart disease and there is no evidence that it works. There are other diseases for which chelation may be offered as an "alternative medicine" treatment. See this site for more info: http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/chelation-therapy/my0e.

Metal binder: I'll assume you're asking about the non-emergent treatment of atherosclerosis. Evidence-based medicine will offer you overpriced pills from big pharma that do what they claim. A chelation therapist will offer you pricey infusions of edta that do nothing but make your fingers tingle. Both should agree that lifestyle especially fitness are much more important in keeping atherosclerosis at bay.

Removes Heavy Metals: The tact nih study on IV chelation is one of the few large clinical trials that showed some benefit.
