Several weeks: It is unusual to break a kneecap - this type of injury takes a long time to heal enough to relieve pain. Sometimes surgery is needed.

Depends: Fracture pain is variable, depending on patient factors, the amount of energy absorbed and the displacement of the fracture. It's often fairly persistent, while a bruise might decrease in pain after a few days. If you continue to have a problem, see an orthopaedic surgeon and get an x-ray to find out for sure.
