Could be nerve pain: Sharp stabbing pains can be "nerve pain". One can see the primary care doctor, who may then refer to the neurologist, the physiatrist (pm&r doctor), or the orthopedic doctor, depending on what the disorder looks to be. Sometimes there is irritation along the nerve, anywhere from where it exits the spine to where it ends in the hand. Other times, it's in the skin, as in a shingles infection.
